Wałasi – band existing for almost 30 years, consists of musicians from the highland regions of Beskid Śląski, Beskid Żywiecki and Podhale. Founded by Zbigniew Wałach, musician and composer, for many years involved in perpetuating and developing traditional music of his region. He is responsible for the band’s overall shape and sound.
Wałasi play the repertoire inherited from the oldest musicians of Beskid Śląski: Jan Kawulok, Michał Sikora, Jan Skotnior-Krężelok, Jan Wolny, Władysław Zogata, Markawica and Jan Sikora. It includes polka, owięziok, shepherd songs – the authentic Goral melodies, transmitted from generation to generation for hundreds of years.
For several years the group cooperated with famous musicians – Józef Skrzek, the legendary figure of Polish rock music (album „Anioł się zwiastuje”, 2007) and classical musicians Krzysztof and Stanisław Lasoń (albums „Wołanie”, „Maj”).
Wałasi has been awarded with numerous prizes in competitions and at festivals – regional, national and international (Festival of Folk Bands and Vocalists in Kazimierz Dolny, Bagpipe Festival in Poznań, Polish Goral Festival in Żywiec, International Festival of Highland Folklore in Zakopane, Eurofolk Festival in Płock). One of their greatest achievements is the prestigious Oskar Kolberg Award won in 2004.
