Further information about some of the workshops:

Along the southern banks of the Vistula, from mazurka to krakoviak

The workshop is a dancing journey from the sources of the Vistula to Krakow. It teaches dances such as Cieszyn mazurka, Żywiec hajduk, Silesian Beskids zagrodnik and krakoviak. All of them feature a variety of steps and figures. They provide good fun too. The workshop is aimed at advanced students, who have got some dance experience (not necessarily in folk dance), sense of rhythm and leading or lead-following skills.

Instructor Piotr Drużny has got 20 years’ experience in Polish dance. He is also a fan of Hungarian folk and discovered Polish dancing heritage through the Hungarian tanchaz. He combines his long experience gained in folk dance ensembles with Hungarian Tanchaz teaching method.

Mazurka Freestyle

Workshop for individuals with considerable experience in dancing mazurkas, who wish to experiment a little, develop their skills, gain more than just basic steps and improvise.

Dance from Przystałowice

The workshop offers instruction by genuine pair of village dancers, Mr and Mrs Cieślak from Przystałowice, and emphasises subtleties and individual traits of dancers. The workshop is dedicated to advanced students with considerable dance experience.

Instructor Piotr Zgorzelski has been running traditional dance workshops in Poland and other countries, teaching dances from Mazovia, Radom region, Greater Poland and Rzeszów region. He has got long-standing cooperation record with Institute of Music and Dance, The Fryderyk Chopin Institute and Adam Mickiewicz Institute. He learnt directly from village dancers and archive records and came up with his own workshop method allowing for contemporary dance skills and sensitivities of a generation deprived of contract with living folk music.

Norwegian dance workshop

The workshop teaches springar, a traditional spring dance from Scandinavia. Everyone is welcome regardless of dance skill level.

Instructor Ånon Egeland has been playing professionally for more than 40 years. He learnt his craft directly from the older players who were his idols, ultimately focusing on the then relatively unknown music of the Agder region. His work in collecting and disseminating this music rescued and reinstated a valuable part of Norwegian tradition that might otherwise have died out. Many of the tunes he recorded have gone on to become an essential part of the broader Nordic repertoire.

Ånon is also among Norway’s most experienced teachers of traditional music, with a track record that dates back to 1988. Since 1999, he has been teaching full-time at university level at what is now the University College of Southeast Norway in Rauland.

Polish dances for beginners

The workshop welcomes everyone who would like to learn to dance. It teaches basics of polka and mazurka.

Instructor Grzegorz Ajdacki promotes traditional dances and regional games for children, youth and adults. He runs classes, events and dance projects across Poland and abroad. He also educates himself, travelling the country and learning from village dancers.

Traditional Music from Podhale

The workshop presents a brief history of highlander music, main characteristics of Podhale playing manner and teaches to play first and second fiddle in a number of highlander songs.

1. Popular marches: Hej tam spod Tater (Hey from under the Tatras), Miała jo se Janicka (I Had Me a Janicek), Przez zielone jare zytko (Through the Green Rye), Dyć my przyjechali (Now We’ve Come Here) and others.

2. Dance tunes: ozwodna and krzesana (spark striking)

3. Janosik and highwaymen tunes

The workshop is dedicated to all highlander music lovers interested in learning to play complex tunes. Playing them by ear is a challenge.

The workshop shall be conducted by Stanisława Galica Górkiewicz, an award-winning fiddler from Bukowina Tatrzańska, student of legendary Podhale musician Bronisława Dziadoń – Konieczna. Stanisława Galica Górkiewicz plays Podhale music in its pure form untainted by borrowings from other regions. She is a long-standing collaborator of the Bukowina community centre, where she was director of music band, music school and director of the centre itself. Thanks to her efforts Bukowina can now be proud of its many exquisite musicians.

Notation – helpful or stifling?

The workshop is devoted to traditional music notation, for instance the complicated scores noted by Oskar Kolberg. The workshop is addressed to violinists who can read music (intermediate level required).

Instructor Janusz Prusinowski is the artistic director of All Mazurkas of the World Festival. He plays violin, hurdy-gurdy and harmonica and is the initiator and animator of traditional music renaissance in Poland. He learned from village musicians: Stanisław Lewandowski, Piotr and Jan Gaca, Kazimierz Meto, Józef Zaraś and Stanisław Stępniak.

Powiślak Workshop with Barbara Michalec and Maniucha Bikont The workshop is addressed to all musicians. To enjoy it without impediment you should be able to play an instrument well enough to repeat melody by the ear.

Instructor Barbara Michalec is an accordionist from Ciszyca Dolna in Kieleckie region. She has been trained in accordion since childhood by her musician father with whom she played at weddings. As a married woman she quit playing, but for some time now she has come back to it and performs traditional music of her region, such as Vistula tunes (powiślaki, zawiślaki), foxtrots and tangos inherited from her dad. She stays in character of performing style that is rarely seen in these parts anymore: the unhurried tempo in triple time, the characteristic rubato and switching from one key to another. The typical keys are adjusted to wind intruments.

Instructor Maniucha Bikont is a singer, cultural anthropologist, PhD candidate at Artes Liberales department of Warsaw University, and field researcher in Poland, Ukraine, Belarus and Russia. She has collaborated with several music and theatre groups recreating traditional music, rites, improv and unconventional singing techniques.

Violin workshop with Leon Lewandowski

The workshop teaches music from the Prosna river basin in Kalisz region. It is a microregion whose eastern part developed slower due to political isolation (is was part of Russian Partition) than the rest of Greater Poland in the west. For this reason it offers a unique experience of old culture. Leon Lewandowski is going to teach wedding repertoire: obereks, owijok and polkas. In the course of the workshop he will explain what owijok is and how two-string bass used to be played. The workshop is dedicated to intermediate level violinists, although confident beginners are welcome too. The key requisite ability is to be able to play a short tune by the ear.

Instructor Leon Lewandowski (born 1926 in Pałka near Kalisz) is the last of the violinists born before WWII in Kalisz region on Prosna. He learnt playing fiddle he got at a village fair back in the time when he was herding cattle as a young boy. Later his uncle bought him a genuine violin from the family of a dead musician. During WWII he played at weddings in a band with bass, three-row accordion and bereban. He has been considered first rate musician in the area.

Instructor Mateusz Raszewski (1980) is an instrument craftsman, violinist and climber. The last student of Jan Gaca and the first one of Leon Lewandowski. He conducts field research in Kalish region and has collected hundreds of recordings of village musicians and singers, as well as antique instruments such as carved bass, which he recreates in his workshop.

From short song to mazurka

The workshop conducted by singer and violinist teaches how to play a sung mazurka tune. It is addressed to violinists who can play fluently enough. It is based on musical repertoire from Gałki Rusinowskie and Przystałowice Małe.

Instructor Maria Siwiec is a singer from Gałki Rusinowskie and leader of Gołcunecki group.

Instructor Paula Kinaszewska is an accomplished artist, actress, singer and fiddler, promotor of traditional music, leader of music band, author of numerous records, concerts, theatre plays, films and recitals, organiser of regular dance events, Dance Parties by the Zoo, winner of Old Tradition competition in 2014.

Accordion/Harmonica Workshop is addressed to accordion and harmonica players. To enjoy this workshop one should be able to play a simple tune by the ear, therefore it is addressed to individuals with basic skills. The workshop teaches obereks and other tunes from Opoczno region.

Instructor Tadeusz Wijata is an accordionist from Dzielna near Opoczno, collaborator of The Folk Culture Friends and Creators Society. For a number of years he has played with Radom violinist Jan Kmita (as Jan Kmita and Band from Dzielna), they have lately performed at the carnival dance in Przystałowice Małe.

Instructor Jakub Zimończyk is an accordionist from Warsaw. Student of Piotr Gaca and Tadeusz Lipiec, he plays music from Northern Lesser Poland, especially Opoczno and Radom regions.
