‘Pizzica Pizzica’ dance
Instructor – Veronica Calati, music Massimiliano De Marco
The ‘Pizzica Pizzica’ is a dance that literally sprung up from the impoverished workers in the fields. It is a dance of celebration and fun; spontaneous; a dance that everyone can do. It originates from Salento in Puglia, the stilhetto heel of Italy, and is one of hundreds of variants that fall under the umbrella of the genre ‘Tarantella’. However, its communicative nature gives the ‘Pizzica Pizzica’ its own unique characterisitic that means that it can not be pigeonholed under any other genre of dance.
The dance and the music encourages everyone to express themselves in their own free way, to create their own steps and their own gestures in order to display their cheerful mood and spirit.
Veronica Calati interprets the dance in the way she feels and understands it whilst her musical partner Massimiliano De Marco plays traditional instruments and sings. The combination of the rhythm of the music and Veronica’s free joyful dancing will inspire all those present to get up and join them.
Veronica and Massimiliano’s passion is easy for all to see and is truly infectious.
“It’s magic. Dancing together to an ancient dance which is still so alive.” Veronica Calati
“This music hits everyone directly because it’s based on a rhythm common to everyone; the heart.” Massimiliano De Marco
