DANCE sets from Kuyavia

Led by Piotr Zgorzelski (Polish Academy of Traditional Dance); Maciej Filipczuk (violin) and Marcin Lorenc (violin, drum) playing
For intermediate dancers – those who have a basic knowledge of dancing in triple meter and can smoothly swirl in circles “towards the sun”

Kujawiaks are beautiful and romantic dances, but due to the specific body movement and a slow rhythm, they are pretty hard to perform. In the olden days, kujawiaks were danced as sets of subsequent dances. In Kuyavia, the set consisted of a chodzony with figures, a kujawiak, and an ober. In a village house, the steps of kujawiaks were flatter, smaller, walk-like. In aristocratic villas, they were longer and wavy, “breathy and puffy.” During the workshops, we will learn to dance the Kuyavia set, dance in pairs in circles “na kseb” (counterclockwise) and “na odsib” (clockwise), and using basic embellishments.

We recommend – bring enough water to drink, an extra shirt, and comfortable shoes, flat or with a small heel. They should have a slight slip, like most elegant shoes do.

Piotr Zgorzelski – dancer, initiator of the revival of Polish traditional dances in non-stage forms. He established and runs the first Polish Academy of Traditional Dance with regular classes all across Poland.
He has been involved in traditional dance for nearly 30 years. He learned directly from village dancers, as well as from archival sources, developing an original program of classes taking into account contemporary predispositions and skills of generations deprived of direct contact with folk music. He is the co-founder of the Dance House Association. Creator and promoter of the Mazurkas Freestyle dance style. Author of online dance lessons which can be found on the taniectradycyjny.pl YouTube channel.
