DANCE – Polish Circular Dances

For intermediate and advanced dancers – you need to be able to smoothly swirl in a couple in the first direction (towards the sun) in the polka and mazurka rhythms.

During the workshop, we will recall the traditional steps of oberek and the rural dancing style. Then, thanks to archival video materials, we will learn about the performance and dancing styles based on dances from Central Poland (Kurpie, Kielce, Radom, and Łowicz regions), used by rural dancers.

The goal of the workshop will be to learn to smoothly dance TO THE RHYTHM OF THE MUSIC, but also to dance LIKE THEY DANCED IN THE PAST (in the first half of the 20th century and before), that is IN CIRCLES – following the sun and towards the sun, using ornaments characteristic for oberek, such as turning your partner, thumps, kneeling, and heel clicking.
Apart from swirling in a couple, swirling in circles, and using ornaments, the workshop will also focus on the ability to have spontaneous fun, which did and still does allow to express your emotions individually through dance.
