FRAME DRUM – dynamics!
Led by Katarzyna Rosik, played by Katarzyna Zedel
for intermediate students, own instrument required
During the workshop we will explore the sound and dynamics of dance tunes once played and loved in the villages of Radom – not only obereks. Where to strum, where to let go, where to shift, where to thicken, where to pause? We will look for the answers to these questions in archival recordings – we will look at the ways of playing three- and two-beat pieces, as well as the ornaments used by the masters of playing the drum and baraban. In addition to learning the patterns of thumps and developing playing technique, we will try to guess the character or temperament of the various tunes-dancers.
In order to actively participate in the workshop, one must have the ability to use a drum and stick and to find oneself rhythmically in tune.
Katarzyna Rosik – has been involved in exploring the culture and traditional music of the Polish countryside since 2008. From the masters of the musical craft she learns singing, dancing and playing the drum. The musical culture of the Kajoc micro-region (Przysucha area) is particularly close to her heart. In 2016, she carried out a research and popularisation project entitled “Drummer, come too” focused on learning about and transferring knowledge of cultural contexts and styles of one-sided drum playing. She owes much to her meetings with Stefan Gaca, Józef Lipiński, Józef Tarnowski and Jan Fokt the Younger, among others.
