SINGING the Swedish style
Led by Kajsa Dahlström
for all participants
In this workshop we will explore the unique world of Sweden’s diverse vocal traditions. We will learn about the ancient shepherd’s call kulning, known as ‘singing for the cows’, as well as melodies and songs sung to dance.
Kulning – is the archaic phenomenon of communicating by poignant, loud, usually only vocalised, wordless singing. Its function is purely practical; in Scandinavia, cows are let out into the forest, and walk freely in it. Pastures in mountainous areas make it necessary to call out to the animals, and for this reason, a richly meaningful and sophisticated tradition has developed over the centuries to communicate with the entrusted herd, or to warn each other of danger. This type of singing is also known in Norway and Finland.
Kajsa Dahlström is a singer and experienced teacher. She graduated from the Royal Swedish Academy of Music with a degree in folk singing, her specialities are pedagogy, music therapy and choir directing. She has been involved in a wide variety of musical projects over the years and has written music that grows out of ancient traditions. She performs on many stages, eager to combine seemingly distant traditions into musical dialogues. Meetings with her are a journey through time and space. Kajsa inspires these journeys – children and adults alike, and she works permanently as an educator at the Stockholm Museum of Performing Arts, and Stockholm Skansen.
