SONGS for spring cleanings and early mornings

Led by Ewa Grochowska
For all interested over the age of 15 – regardless of your (un)advancement in vocal techniques and the love of traditional music

Sometimes spring comes in the middle of winter, making us anxious that its premature arrival will interfere with the natural order. Love, too, can come “at a wrong time,” in your autumn years, against all cultural patterns that portray it young, filled with vital forces. Tradition, often connected to the slogans such as “canon” or “pattern,” goes beyond them, breaks away from stereotypes. Spontaneous and unpredictable, it finds the language to talk about everything that seems out of place or time in the life of a community, everything that is different from what we expected. It can encompass the sudden plot twists and random surprises.
This is what the songs we will be working on during the meeting talk about. About love, new beginnings, and the sense of a full life, but also about the loss, longing, fear, and uncertainty that come with them. We will sing short folk songs, lyrical songs and ballads. The workshop will begin and end with ritual spring songs.

Ewa Grochowska – violinist and singer. In her art, she draws on the sources of traditional culture and music she was raised in. Student of violinist Jan Gaca from Przystałowice Małe (2000-2013), Stanisław Głaz, Stanisław Witkowski (2013-2022), Janina Chmiel, Maria Kowalik, and Karolina Demaniuk. She loves the traditional wedding songs which cannot be sung half-heartedly – she has been studying them with village singers from Poland, Ukraine, and Belarus since 1999.
