VIOLIN Melodies from Jan Gaca
Led by Maciej Żurek; Marek Szwajkowski drumming
For intermediate and advanced players – you need to bring your own instrument and be able to learn a melody by ear and repeat it on the instrument
We will try to find the dance melodies which Jan Gaca liked to play, but which the workshop participants don’t know too well, or at least don’t play often. Then, we will analyze their rhythmical structures, ways of embellishing the melodic theme, and the bow technique. Having learned the basic rules of the art of the Przystałowice phrase, we will test it on other mazurka melodies (such as those we only know from singing).
Maciej Żurek – sociologist, violinist, beekeeper, leader of the Tratwa association. Student of Jan Gaca from Przystałowice Małe. Founder and member of Podróżniczy Kolektyw Skrzypcowy, and initiative gathering players and researchers of traditional Polish music. Initiator and co-founder of the village schools of tradition in Przystałowice Małe and Glina (southern Mazovia) and dance clubs active in several villages of the region.
